Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Pet Protection Agreement? The Hirschfeld Pet Protection Agreement is an easy, convenient and economical way to ensure your pet is cared for when you are no longer able. How much does The Hirschfeld Pet Protection Agreement Cost? Your first Agreement costs $49.95. Each additional Agreement costs only $29.95. All purchases are payable by credit card.
Pet Trusts also must have a Federal Employer Identification Number applied for and granted by the IRS. Any individual taxpayer or entity ( trust, probate estate, corp. etc.) needs one for IRS return filing and other compliance reasons. If I put my pet in the will, is it enough? No. A will is effective ONLY after the owner dies. The Hirschfeld Pet Protection Agreement* allows you to specify care for your pet throughout the owners life, incapacity, and after death. Additionally, detailed instructions left in the will for the care of your pet is not enforceable in court. The Agreement ensures that your instructions are carried out and that any funds left for the care of the pet are used as you direct. Can this Agreement help me keep my pet, even if I am too ill to care for him myself? Yes. You can instruct that your pet remains with you in your home or even a nursing or other care facility (in which pet’s are allowed). How do I get The Hirschfeld Pet Protection Agreement? Creating your Agreement is easy! Just click here to get started by logging in and creating a new profile. You will be asked a series of questions about your pet and the provisions you’d like to make. When you’re finished, all your answers will be transferred to a PDF file of your own personal Hirschfeld Pet Protection Agreement. You will now be able to download the file, and print it out for your records. Your documents will also be stored here, on The Hirschfeld Pet Protection Agreement website, in your personal account. Click here to see more detailed instructions » What are the legal requirements? The owner and guardian must both sign and consent to the Agreement. The Pet Guardian agrees to be responsible for the care of the pet, and follow the owner’s instruction. We highly recommend that the Backup Pet Guardian also read, understand and sign the document (although this is not a requirement). It is not required to have witnesses or notaries, but we leave the choice to you. Although it’s not required, it’s always a good idea to review legal documents with your attorney. What if I want to make changes to The Hirschfeld Pet Protection Agreement? Prior to finalizing your PDF you may edit and make additions to your Agreement as often as you wish. If you don’t have the answer to a question right away, skip it. You can return to that question by viewing your Profile, viewing the summary for your Agreement, and editing the appropriate answer. When you have all your answers finalized, click the “Finalize My PDF” button. From that point, you will have 7 DAYS to finish all your answers. After 7 days, the document will be permanent. Any further revisions will require an additional purchase. You can create this PDF as many times as necessary, but always save a copy of it to your hard drive, for your own records. PLEASE NOTE: Once you finalize your PDF you will have 7 days to discuss it and change any of your answers. After this 7 day period, edits to the agreement will no longer be possible. What if I have more than one pet? Each Agreement applies specifically to one pet. However, if you wish for all your pets to receive the same care from the same guardians, you may enter “ALL MY PETS” as the pet’s name. If one or more of your pets has special needs we recommend a separate Agreement for each pet. Members may purchase additional Agreements at the member’s discounted rate of $29.95. Each of your final documents will be provided as a separate PDF file, and will be stored in your personal account on the website. Why do I need a Pet Guardian Organization? A Pet Guardian Organization can provide a fall back for your pet’s care in case both the Pet Guardian and the Backup Pet Guardian are unwilling or unable to care for your pet. People move, marry, become allergic and are sometimes simply no longer able to care for your pet. Naming a not-for-profit, no-kill shelter or sanctuary will help ensure your pet finds a safe new home. There are many possible Pet Guardian Organizations for your pet.
